Liverpool Acoustic's pick of December's gigs (Page 108)

Ahead of Thursday's monthly newsletter, here is Liverpool Acoustic's pick of December's acoustic gigs - think of it as an early Christmas pressie from us to you!

Friday 2nd December - An evening of gypsy jazz
10.00pm @ The Lantern Theatre, Blundell Street

This is a 'not to be missed' gig for lovers of the gypsy jazz style of music. Paris-based violinist Daniel John Martin and Liverpool/London-based guitar virtuoso John Wheatcroft will be performing together for the very first time, along with Micky Dunne on rhythm guitar and 'Count' John McCormick on double bass. Tickets are only £5 in advance, and £6 on the door. Doors open at 9.00pm and tickets can be bought from the venue 0151 703 0000 thelanterntheatre.co.uk

Saturday 3rd December - Shoplifting
6.00pm @ The Black-E

Although not entirely acoustic, Shop-Lifting is an event well worth supporting. It's a special benefit night in aid of the News From Nowhere bookshop on Bold Street, raising money for badly needed building works and to help fix their lift to keep the building accessible. There will be family activities from 6pm to 8pm, with 'grown up fun' from 8pm to 2am. Affordable vegan food is served from 6pm to 10pm, and drinkies will be available from 8pm to 2am.

Performing at the event will be Lovecraft (solo), The Splintered Ukes, Hope Street Harmonies, Tramp Attack, and Babadub. Ticket are £7 wages, £5 unwaged, and accompanied kids go free. Tickets available from News From Nowhere, 95 Bold Street 0151 708 7270

Saturday 3rd December - Bird 'Phantoms EP' launch

Sunday 4th December - Stephen Fretwell
7.00pm @ The Kazimier*

Manchester's ever-popular Stephen Fretwell plays an intimate show at The Masque, in the Ink room. Tickets £10 from ticketweb.

*STOP PRESS - with the closure of The Masque this event has been moved to The Kazimier. All tickets previously bought will be valid for the new venue.

Monday 5th December - The Woodwards & Lucky Fonz III
8.00pm @ Mello Mello

Touring the UK from their home in Amsterdam, The Woodwards bring their lush, harmonised vocals and folk-noir sound to Liverpool to promote their two new EPs. Also performing is fellow Lowlander Lucky Fonz II with his quirky yet engaging songs which have gained him a dedicated following on Amsterdam's underground music scene. And the great thing is this gig is FREE!!! thewoodwards.nl

Tuesday 6th December - Chris Difford
7.30pm @ The Brink

The double Ivor Novellow winning Chris Difford is coming to The Brink on Parr Street for an intimate gig in a great new venue. A member of Squeeze (with Glenn Tilbrook) Chris has written some of the most enduring and best-loved songs of our time, such as Up The Junction, Labeled With Love, and Cool For Cats. More recently he's co-written a song on the new album by Ollie Murs, and skills as a songwriter and performer are in high demand. Tickets are £12 and can be bought from the venue on 0151 703 0582.

Friday 9th December - Liverpool Acoustic's Christmas Party
8.00pm @ The View Two Gallery

Our last event of the year sees music from Sonnenberg, Alex Hulme, and visiting from London, via Australia and India we've got travelling duo Farrago.
