Left leaning Liverpool singer-songwriter Alun Parry makes a welcome return to music with his brand new single Your Kind Invitation.

The song is a heartfelt country flavoured ballad that has hints of Elvis Costello from the Almost Blue era and is the first from Alun’s forthcoming album. Sonically, the recording reminded me of another song called Climb which is from his album Freedom Rider as both recordings feature the dobro. The laid back production benefits from the addition of fiddle, which compliments the dobro.

The lyrics concern a relationship that has ended, with the person they were once with now in a relationship with one of their friends who he introduced. Despite the singers blessing, there’s a sad resignation. If the sentiments here are auto-biographical then that makes the emotional pain in Alun’s voice all the more convincing. This is an expressively soulful performance and a change of pace from Alun’s more socially political material.

In short Your Kind Invitation is one of Alun Parry’s best songs and a strong preview for his next album.
