In a world filled with noise, few artists dare to embrace quietness with the kind of fearless intimacy that Dorothy Bird achieves with Whispering Paper. The Berlin–Liverpool-based art-pop singer-songwriter returns with her second full-length album — a glowing, emotionally captivating piece of work that resonates with the soul.
Following the critical acclaim of her 2022 debut Belonging, Bird takes her writing even deeper, navigating personal grief, transformation, and the fragile beauty of human connection. Whispering Paper unfolds as a radiant act of remembering, of reassembling the self through sound. The result is an immersive, slow-burning journey that stays with you long after the final note.
From the first note of opening track Dream With Me, Bird establishes a world of her very own that is otherworldly and rooted in emotional truth. Through the layers of ambient synths, a driving piano melody, and Bird’s voice, soaring with the gentleness of a morning fog as it brushes through the crisp air. There is a surreality to it – a dream-state where time slows, and the listener is invited to step inside.
The second track, Meteorites, captures the album’s emotional and lyrical centrepiece. The line “telling whispering paper things that I love” becomes the albums namesake, and its poetic weight is immense. Here, Bird meditates on the quiet yet important things we do to preserve memory, the way small details linger while more significant moments fade. The production is tender, almost translucent, with ambient textures and echoing motifs that reflect the weightlessness of grief.
In Yes Maybe, Bird explores indecision and the emotional residue of past misunderstandings. Built around a pulsing, minimalist beat and warm synths, the track strikes a delicate balance between innocence and regret. The lyricism is restrained yet suggestive: “Do you wanna hold my hand, Do you wanna hold me back,” she sings, in a voice that flickers between clarity and hesitation. It’s a masterclass in emotional ambiguity, something Bird excels at throughout the record.
The final track, It Only Takes One, feels like a cathartic release at the end of the album. The repetition of the lines “It only takes one, To end this game, It only takes one, To stop the flame” paired with the soaring electric guitars and driving percussion brings the album to a climactic close. The message put forward by Bird, that change, connection, and healing often start with a single action, word, or moment is clear to hear and more importantly to feel through this closing track.
What makes Whispering Paper such a beautifully composed set of songs, is not just its emotional content, but the way that content is shaped — with profound care and sonic clarity. Producer Jon Lawton’s contributions are crucial, allowing each track to breathe while maintaining a cohesive identity. His ability to balance ambient electronic textures with acoustic intimacy perfectly complements Bird’s artistic vision.
This is an album that subtly invites attention – slowly, softly, but with unmistakable gravity. It’s a record for quiet moments, for the in-between moments when life feels most raw.
Dorothy Bird has crafted something rare here: an album that feels both incredibly personal and universally resonant. It doesn’t shout to be heard, but once it finds you, it remains.
