Mondegreen, hailing from Widnes, have been playing together for years, as the group is made up of a trio of sisters and close friends. Mondegreen’s latest EP – ‘Change’, made of three songs ‘Sometimes’, ‘Change’ and ‘Unsung Hero’ is a beautiful reflection of the group’s live sound. Consisting of three guitar-playing singers, the group has an acoustic sound with a bit of electric guitar over the top, bringing a rockier dimension to the overall effect.
‘Sometimes’ opens with unaccompanied voices, almost reminiscent of The Beatles ‘Because’ and then moves into a catchy riff on the electric guitar with solo voice. The song builds with additional voices and guitar. The chorus, including the line, ‘Somethings you just get over and other scars, you just can’t cover’, creates a meditative insight into life and the struggles it throws at you. ‘Change’, the title track, has something of an Americana feel to it. Again, it features Mondegreen’s close, perfectly attuned harmonies. The most upbeat song the on EP, it has a sense of purpose to it, looking for a change that can only be brought around by action. It finishes, unresolved, almost inviting the listener to go out and find the change referred to in the song. The final song ‘Unsung Hero’ has a darker sound to it, a song about secrets and unhappiness. As always with Mondegreen, the harmonies are used well, in this song to add intrigue and mystery. The final section of the song is a little more upbeat than the rest, ending the with a more positive and victorious sound than the beginning.
‘Change’ is available on CD and Spotify. Well worth a listen!
