Hailing from Preston in Lancashire, roots singer-songwriter Susie Jones has been doing the rounds with her group for a number of years. 2015 saw critical acclaim with the album Shake Away The Devil, with Americana UK describing her as a rare individual in the music business. As a singer, Susie’s distinctive voice may recall Beth Orton but with a greater range. Amply supported by Rob Kentell on guitar and Dave Parker on bass, the group is currently undertaking a UK tour that has already taken in recent Liverpool dates at 81 Renshaw and Parr Street Studio 2.
The EP Hear It My Way is highlighted by the insistent title song and benefits from having a more earthy production than previous release, Late Night Carousel. Western Wind is also a strong upbeat opener but it’s the sombre tones of Travelling Heart that is the real find here. The voice is the main attraction throughout but the electric guitar flourishes add a nice atmospheric counterpoint to the stripped back material. This mood is best demonstrated on the track Once In A While, with the sound recalling the production of Daniel Lanois on the Bob Dylan albums Oh Mercy and Time Out Of Mind.
Hear It My Way by Susie Jones is a largely sombre affair with some engaging heartfelt personal reflections that’s well worth a listen. The EP is available on cassette and as a digital download from Bandcamp.
