March is here, and brings with it the return of Threshold! Hooray! It also sees Liverpool Acoustic Live’s first ever Youth Special, with all of the talented performers aged 15, 16 or 17. Exciting, eh? And if that wasn’t enough, our Diary News section is simply bursting at the seams! It must be Spring in the air…

LIVERPOOL ACOUSTIC LIVE
Liverpool Acoustic Live this month is our first ever YOUTH SPECIAL at the View Two Gallery, and takes place on Friday 22nd March 2013.
- Dominic Dunn – Although too young to be nominated, last year’s Liverpool Music Awards classed 16 year old Dom (he was 15 at the time) as ‘one to watch’
- Sophia Ben-Yousef – Whether playing original songs or covers on piano or guitar, 15 year old Sophia has an informal, self-expressive style that draws the listener in.
- Dylan Tierney – Visiting all the way from Inverness, 15 year old Dylan Tierney is a precociously talented performer who can’t wait to perform for us at the View Two Gallery.
- Milly Pye – Having impressed us during an open mic spot last year, 16 year old Milly returns to the View Two for a richly-deserved full set of original songs.
- George Lawless – Having played at our open mic last year we were so impressed we gave him a short opening slot supporting TJ & Murphy. The boys were also impressed and offered 17 year old George a support slot at their International Guitar Festival of Great Britain gig.
Tickets are available in advance for £5 from wegottickets.com/liverpoolacoustic or for £6 on the night.
Doors open at 8.00pm. The event starts at 8.30pm and goes through to 11.00pm.
You can join the facebook event at facebook.com/liverpoolacoustic/events
All of our future live events can be found at liverpoolacoustic.co.uk/live and if you want to receive information about tickets before they go on general sale then sign up to our events publicity mailing list here.
DIARY NEWS
We’re slowly working our way through the Liverpool Acoustic diary, checking (as far as we can) to see if events are still running. If we email an organiser and don’t get a reply after two weeks then we’ll assume it’s no longer taking place and will remove the event from the diary. We can’t say fairer than that, can we?
As ever, if you know of any entries that are out of date, drop us a line using the ‘Contact‘ page. And if you have anything to add to the diary, just visit the ‘Diary‘ page and click the ‘Add Event’ button.
All change…
- We mentioned last month that Marc Hannon’s weekly Basement Folk was moving to the Caledonia and becoming a monthly event. That started last month and is every four weeks, and the next one is on Wednesday 13th March from 8.30pm to midnight. It’s free and it’s at the Cally – what’s not to like?
- We also mentioned last month that Cup of Tea open mic was taking place every Thursday at Bar 43. It has since moved and now takes place at Lomax.
- The Tillerman Show has moved from The Liffey on Wednesday nights, and is now a radio show broadcast live from Lomax every Friday from 4pm to 6pm. Why not pop along and see who’s playing a live set? If you can’t be there in person, listen online at liverradio.co.uk
- Radical Liverpool has a new home, having moved to The Casa on Hope Street. Their next event is on Saturday 9th March and is celebrating International Women’s Day. See diary entry below.
- The weekly Orange Show every Thursday at The Brink is now F.A.M.E. open mic on the fourth Thursday of the month (except for March, which is on 21st March).
You say goodbye…
- Disappointingly the Wro Open Mic has been pulled by the bar’s owner who, apparently, prefers upbeat covers to original songwriting. #shame
- D&N on St James Street has ceased trading, which means the Thursday open mic and Friday Lemon Hippo events have stopped. A new venture called Siren is taking its place, and if they get any acoustic events off the ground we’ll pass the details on.
- The Manouchetones no longer play every Monday at Cafe Tabac. However, if you’re craving a fix of gypsy jazz goodness then check them out at The Lantern Theatre on 27th March (see Diary Selection below)
- Hannah’s Bar no longer hosts an open mic on either Sunday or Tuesday.
- Art. Love. Local. no longer runs every Wednesday at The Brink.
Diary cleanup…
- Monday Marmalade at Chameleon Bar has stopped. If it returns we’ll let you know.
- Open Mic every Sunday at The Flute on Hardman Street no longer takes place.
- No reply from… Children of the Revolution weekly (Sunday) at The Sink (is the venue still open on Berry Street?). Removed from diary.
- No reply from… For Folks Sake, monthly (first Sunday) at Bumper. Removed from diary.
- No reply from… Keep It Live, weekly (Monday) at Envi. Removed from diary.
And I say hello…!
- For some (inexplicable) reason the regular Saturday afternoon session at Heebie Jeebies was missing from the diary. Worry ye not, for it’s now been added! Hosted by Johnny Sands, it runs from 3pm to 6pm every Saturday, has anything from 7 to 14 guest performers, and famously features free food (try saying that with a sausage roll in your gob!). More details from Johnny on facebook.
- Pianist and singer-songwriter Laura Wray has a new residency at The James Monro on Tithebarn Street. The first one is on Sunday 3rd March, but all following events will be the second Sunday of the month. From 7.30pm to 10.30pm Laura will be playing mostly covers with her own twist, plus a few soulful originals. Food is served until 8pm, and the night is free to attend.
- The Open Mic Experience has been running since August 2012, every Wednesday at The Clarence Hotel in New Brighton. It starts at 8.30pm (footy permitting) and finishes at 11.15pm. Hosted by MADMEN (Mark Whiteley and Steve Lawson) the venue has keyboard, congas, small kit, and bass. Guitarists bring your own instrument.
OK, are you paying attention for the next two new events? Good.
- Songwriters’ Circle takes place on the first Sunday of every month at The Albert on Lark Lane. It runs from 6pm to 9pm and is an opportunity for songwriters to play their songs and get feedback from other songwriters. It’s also a good place to get help with those unfinished songs you’ve had stacking up over the years. No mics, no fuss, and it’s free. facebook.com/songalongasong
- Songwriter Sunday takes place on the first Sunday of every month at Studio 2, Parr Street. It runs from 9pm to 11.30pm and features two booked acts plus a set from host Dave O’Grady. It’s free, and anyone interested in playing should email Dave.
