In the past here at Liverpool Acoustic we’ve taken the odd side swipe at the Mathew Street Music Festival for its seeming over-reliance on tribute artists, so it might come as a surprise that we’re telling you all about a tribute act coming to Liverpool next week. The act in question, however, is no Amy Housewine, Take This, or Think Lizzy, but one more suited to the followers of our website.
Since the untimely death of much-loved Yorkshire musician, singer and songwriter Jake Thackray in 2002, adopted Yorkshireman John Watterson has been keeping Jake’s memory, music and humour alive by performing as Fake Thackray.
John’s Fake Thackray show has been collecting plaudits left, right and centre.
“We can’t have Jake back but this is the next best thing – a real tribute.” Mike Harding, BBC Radio 2
“Jake Thackray’s songs are funny, poignant, witty, tricky, romantic and wise. They are also very hard to perform and that is one of the reasons we don’t hear them so much. John Watterson has made a proper tribute to this unique British song writer. Not only has he taken great care to replicate Jakes phrasing and emphasis but he has managed to play guitar in Jake’s style too. John is now bringing this wonderful work to a new public who will no doubt love them as much as Jake’s old fans. It is marvellous that Jake Thackray’s treasured songs ride again. They are in safe hands.” Ralph McTell
Fake Thackray is in great demand. Earlier this month he performed at the Great British Folk Festival in Skegness and will be opening for Fairport Convention on their Winter Tour 2013.
Fake Thackray is performing at the Everyman Folk Club on Wednesday 12th December 2012 (that’s 12/12/12!)
It takes place at Osqa’s Piano Bar, Oldham Street (off Renshaw Street, behind Roscoes Bar and The Dispensary).
Doors open at 7.45pm, and the music starts at 8.00pm. The normal end is 11.15pm-ish but since this is the club’s Christmas Party it could go on a little longer!
There is no entry charge, but they do pass the hat round on the night and have a raffle too.
