DESCRIPTION:Who doesn’t get the blues at the start of January? Christmas and New Year are over for another year. Our waists are wider\, wallets and purses lighter\, and we’re faced with the twin chores of taking down the decorations and dragging ourselves back into work…! \nIf that’s not enough to give you the January Blues then we don’t know what is. \nBut fear not\, Liverpool Acoustic are here to help you Beat the January Blues with a FREE blues night at 81 Renshaw on Friday 5th January. \nTo make the night a little easier on the pocket all we’re asking for the poor blues men and woman performing on the night is that you make a donation into the PAY WHAT YOU FEEL bucket on the door. \nRAPHAEL CALLAGHAN\nHeadlining is former Liverpool resident and respected bluesman Raphael Callaghan. As ‘Blue C’ along with Christine Purnell\, Raphael organised regular blues events at Fort Perch Rock before moving to North Wales. Now a solo artist\, Callaghan has recently launched a new album called Said And Done\, and is playing his first gig back in Liverpool for a fair few years. \nAL ‘BLUESMAN’ PETERS\nAL is a legend on the local music scene and one of the best blues musicians around. AL plays songs about love\, loss\, war\, politics\, and youthful exuberance. \nJO BYWATER\nA professional guitar teacher by day\, by night Jo is equally at home on a stage performing her distinctive style of blues inspired by her resonator guitar and the ups and downs of life. Jo is a previous winner of the Liverpool Acoustic Songwriting Challenge. \nDoors open at 7.30pm and the music kicks off at 8.00pm with a short set from Liverpool Acoustic head honcho Graham ‘The Greens’ Holland. \nRemember\, this is a FREE gig with a PAY WHAT YOU FEEL donation bucket – even blues performers have to eat!

DESCRIPTION:Finalists and new venue announced for Liverpool Acoustic Songwriting Challenge 2017 Showcase Final\n\nTen talented local songwriters have won a place at the Liverpool Acoustic Songwriting Challenge 2017 Showcase Final taking place on Saturday 13th January 2018 at the new venue\, LEAF on Bold St. \nSongwriters submitted brand new songs inspired by works of art on display across the Liverpool City Region during the October entry period. Judges Stephen Langstaff\, Kaya Herstad Carney\, Robert Vincent and Jon Lawton listened to all of the entries and gave each one a score based on lyrics\, melody\, composition and originality. The points from the judges were added together and the songwriters with the ten highest scores were awarded a place at the Showcase Final. \nEach of the ten finalists will perform their song at the Showcase Final with an image of the work of art that inspired it projected onto the big screen for everyone to see. At the end of the night the winner of the Judges’ Award will be announced and a vote will be taken to find the Audience Favourite winner. The winning songwriters in each category will have their songs professionally recorded at Crosstown Studios. \nIn addition\, there will be a special performance on the night from Operation Lightfoot\, who were such a big hit at previous Showcase Finals. \nThe finalists are (in alphabetical order):- \n\nEmma Thuy Linney – Disappearing\nFreya Halvorsen – Devine Sarah\nHilde Gundersen – Listen\nIain Paterson – Long Dark Road\nJunior Dayvis – Passage Of The African\nKeir Howard – Speaking\nLydiah – Narcissus\nMichael Aldag – Wings\nSarah Jones – Only You Who Knows\nTom Stichbury – Forlorn and Raised\n\nEach of the ten songs is available to listen to on the Songwriting Challenge SoundCloud page where you can also see the work of art that inspired it and read the lyrics. \nsoundcloud.com/songwritingchallenge/sets/showcase-final-2017 \nEntry to the Showcase Final is £6 in advance and on the door. We’re back after our extended Christmas and New Year break\, and raring to go! \nHosted as usual by the inimitable Dr Derek King\, this is the friendliest open mic night in Liverpool.
