SUMMARY:My Darling Clementine - Country Darkness/Christmas Light @ Music Room 04/12/22
DESCRIPTION:A Winter Celebration of Clementine\, Costello\, Country and Christmas \n\n\n\nMy Darling Clementine’s most recent album\, Country Darkness – The songs of Elvis Costello\, has been hailed as a classic. The new album sees them collaborating with the piano genius Steve Nieve\, Costello’s long time right-hand man\, as they reinterpret songs from the Costello back catalogue\, in particular his more country and country soul flavoured songs. \n\n\n\nA labour of love on multiple levels\, My Darling Clementine – the sobriquet of spouses Michael Weston King and Lou Dalgleish – began as a homage to classic country duets of the 60’s and 70’s. During the past 9 years they have played over 800 shows around the world\, won numerous awards and have more than earned their own bona fides\, with their wry yet heart-on-sleeve song craft spotlighting the vagaries of romance and the human condition\, and their match-made-in-heaven harmonies. \n\n\n\nIn this show\, the duo will perform a number of the Costello songs\, many favourites from their own nine year back catalogue\, as well as some of their favourite seasonal country classics. \n\n\n\n‘King and Dalgleish have earned their place in the role call of great country duettists.’ Uncut\n\n\n\n‘My Darling Clementine mix country gloom with excellent musicianship and very fine songs.’ The Guardian

SUMMARY:It Takes Two: Merseyside’s Best Vocal Duos @ Music Room 26/11/22
DESCRIPTION:It Takes Two: Merseyside’s Best Vocal Duos @ Music Room 25/11/21\n\n\n\n Tennessee Waltz\, Rob Jone & Rob WhiteIgloo Hearts\, White Little Lies\n\n\n\nIt Takes Two is back in the Music Room for the fourth time with a brand new line-up featuring four of Merseyside’s most exciting vocal duos – Tennessee Waltz\, Rob Jones and Rob White\, Igloo Hearts\, and White Little Lies. \n\n\n\nTennessee Waltz are a close harmony acoustic country duo from Merseyside\, comprising singer-songwriters Jimmy Rae (vocals\, guitar\, harmonica) and Sarah-Lou Fletcher (vocals\, guitar\, mandolin and percussion). Since joining forces in 2015\, they have established a solid reputation on the local music scene with their original material. Their live shows also feature their distinctive interpretations of songs by classic and contemporary country artists including Johnny Cash\, Patsy Cline\, the Everly Brothers and Emmylou Harris. \n\n\n\nRob Jones and Rob White were born and raised in Liverpool and have been harmonising since meeting at school. Rob Jones’ songs attempt to deal with the ups and downs of life\, public transport\, heartbreak\, The Monkees and the Mersey rain-sometimes all in the same song. \n\n\n\n‘The harmonies\, of which Simon and Garfunkel would be proud\, are beautiful but with a generous sprinkle of Merseyside realism; the effect of the combination is just something to behold.’Liverpool Sound & Vision on Rob Jones and Rob WhiteIgloo Hearts are Wrexham based couple James and Katie MacGregor. Their music incorporates classical piano and powerful harmonies\, in a style that is hauntingly beautiful. Finalists at the recent Liverpool Acoustic Songwriting Competition\, the duo have played at many stunning venues across Wales\, and the North West. \n\n\n\nWhite Little Lies are Americana and close-harmony duo Vanessa Murray and Daniel Saleh. They have developed an ability to create songs that make you tap your feet as well as writing ballads that carry much more emotional significance. Each show is a guaranteed rollercoaster of emotions\, from elation to reflection\, and you really get the sense that there is a piece of personal experience in everything they create.

SUMMARY:Jon Gomm @ Music Room 05/11/22
DESCRIPTION:Jon Gomm is a singer-songwriter and acoustic solo performer based in Yorkshire\, known for his once-seen-never-forgotten virtuoso guitar style. This involves slapping\, tapping and retuning as he plays\, producing a huge\, multi-layered sound filled with bass\, drums and near-orchestral depth and complexity\, all from a single guitar. \n\n\n\nHis songs are often deeply emotive\, whether with or without his soft\, affecting voice. And his live performances are intimate and powerful\, but always punctured by his natural North Of England wit and self-deprecation. \n\n\n\nHis breakthrough came in 2012\, when he released his first ever single\, ‘Passionflower’\, along with a video of him performing the song\, which went viral\, totalling well over 20 million views across platforms. Suddenly being catapulted from cult obscurity to mainstream acceptance has been a strange experience for someone so devoted to his craft\, and Jon is an unlikely guitar hero who remains very much true to his roots in the UK acoustic circuit. Jon has released 4 studio albums\, his latest being The Faintest Idea.

SUMMARY:Martin Carthy with support from Danny Bradley @ Music Room 20/09/22
DESCRIPTION:For more than 50 years\, Martin Carthy has been one of folk music’s greatest and best loved innovators. His skill\, stage presence and natural charm have won him many admirers\, not only from within the folk scene\, but also far beyond it. \n\n\n\nTrailblazing musical partnerships with\, amongst others\, Steeleye Span\, Dave Swarbrick and his award-winning wife (Norma Waterson) and daughter Eliza Carthy have resulted in more than 40 albums\, but Martin has only recorded 10 solo albums. Whether in the folk clubs\, on the concert stage or making TV appearances – there are few roles that Martin Carthy hasn’t played. \n\n\n\nHe’s a ballad singer\, a ground-breaking acoustic and electric-guitarist\, and an authoritative interpreter of newly composed material. Perhaps\, most significant of all\, are his settings of traditional songs with guitar\, which have influenced a generation of artists\, including Bob Dylan and Paul Simon\, on both sides of the Atlantic. \n\n\n\nSupport is from Danny Bradley\, winner of the Liverpool Acoustic Songwriting Challenge 2021 Judges’ Award.

SUMMARY:SOLD OUT - Merry Hell with Gerry Ffrench @ Music Room 23/04/22
DESCRIPTION:THIS SHOW IS NOW SOLD OUT\n\n\n\nAfter selling out the last three years Liverpool Acoustic’s favourite folk-rock band returns for another hell-raising show at the Liverpool Philharmonic Hall’s Music Room on [date to be confirmed]. \n\n\n\nSupport on the night is from respected local folk artist Gerry Ffrench. \n\n\n\nMerry Hell have made a name for themselves in recent years as one of the most energetic and entertaining bands on the UK folk festival circuit\, with four critically acclaimed albums under their belts. \n\n\n\nFounded on the ever-evolving Folk tradition – music made by the people and shared by the people. Though their hearts and souls are tuned to the songs which came before\, Merry Hell bring us new words and music forged from their own experiences\, from the lows and the loves of their lives. \n\n\n\nEmerging from the ashes of festival favourites\, punk folk band Tansads\, Merry Hell retains a nucleus of brothers John\, Bob and Andrew Kettle (guitar\, mandolin and vocals respectively)\, along with keyboard player\, Lee Goulding and drummer Andy Jones\, and the addition of keys and vocalist\, Virginia Kettle has helped create a new identity\, purpose and spirit\, in their music. \n\n\n\nThis is a standing event. There are chairs in the bar area on a first come\, first served basis. \n\n\n\nNOTE – Liverpool Philharmonic reserves the right to reschedule\, move this show to the main hall\, or reduce capacity if required due to Covid-19 restrictions. \n\n\n\n£14 (£12 concessions)

SUMMARY:Elfin Bow\, Little Sparrow and Daria Kulesh @ Music Room 26/02/22
DESCRIPTION:NEW DATE\n\n\n\nElfin Bow\, Little Sparrow and Daria Kulesh\n\n\n\nLiverpool Acoustic presents three songwriters who share a rare musical synergy and come together for the first time to showcase their magical songs and stories. Elfin Bow\, Little Sparrow and Daria Kulesh\, all three skilled songwriters and captivating performers\, will take to the stage in the style of a song-writers circle. \n\n\n\nDescribed by Shindig Magazine as\, ‘lyrically astute and melodically inventive\,’ Elfin Bow’s pastoral pysch-folk music is deeply rooted in the life and nature that surrounds her. Her stories and songs\, played on piano\, guitar\, mandolin and banjo\, weave a tapestry that combine mysterious characters\, myths and legends\, with the heartache and adventure of real life. \n\n\n\nAs captivating to watch as she is to listen to\, Manchester singer-songwriter\, Little Sparrow’s beautifully emotive use of expression mirrors the sincerity of her delivery. Her delicately crafted songs draw on influences as diverse as Kate Bush\, All About Eve and PJ Harvey\, woven into the colourful tapestry of her music\, often with a mysterious fairytale-like quality. \n\n\n\nDaria Kulesh has been described by Danny Farragher (Folk All) as ‘the voice of fairy tales\, being able to create the enthrallment of the faerie realm and equally bring terror as the evil queen whose very words could chill your blood and capture your soul’. A folk award nominee\, her Russian and Ingush roots are reflected in her music\, intertwined with multicultural influences she has experienced on her turbulent and exciting journey through life. \n\n\n\nTickets are £12 (£15 Premium) available from the Liverpool Phil box office. Doors open at 7pm and the show starts at 8pm.

SUMMARY:CANCELLED - Woody Guthrie and "Old Man Trump"\, with Will Kaufman @ Music Room 01/11/20
DESCRIPTION:Will Kaufman\n\n\n\n<< URGENT UPDATE >>\n\n\n\nUnfortunately\, due to current conditions this show has been cancelled and won’t be rescheduled.\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn December 1950\, Woody Guthrie moved his family into a new apartment in Brooklyn’s Beach Haven. His new landlord\, it turned out\, was none other than Fred Trump\, father of the US president.Over 60 years later\, Donald Trump would proclaim on the campaign trail: “My legacy is my father’s legacy.” It was\, among other things\, a legacy of corruption and race-hatred. Woody Guthrie soon found this out. As he wrote: I suppose Old Man Trump knows Just how much Racial Hate he stirred up In the bloodpot of human hearts When he drawed That color line Here at his Eighteen hundred family project \n\n\n\nWill Kaufman – singer\, multi-instrumentalist\, and Professor of American Studies – is recognised as the world’s leading authority on Woody Guthrie. He is the author of Woody Guthrie\, American Radical (2011)\, Woody Guthrie’s Modern World Blues (2017)\, and Mapping Woody Guthrie (2019). \n\n\n\nIn 2014\, Will discovered\, buried in the archives\, Guthrie’s previously unpublished song lyrics and other writings condemning Fred Trump’s racism. He has now turned these discoveries into a new music and spoken-word presentation\, following on from his celebrated shows\, Woody Guthrie: Hard Times and Hard Travelin’ and Woody Guthrie: The Long Road to Peekskill.Woody Guthrie and “Old Man Trump” brings to life all the anger and contempt that Guthrie felt for those in power who will deny justice to their fellow human beings on account of the color of their skin. \n\n\n\nAgainst the backdrop of Guthrie’s racial awakening and emergent activism\, Will introduces such previously unheard songs as “Trump Made a Tramp Out of Me” and “Beach Haven Ain’t My Home\,” along with a host of other Guthrie songs about racial injustice and struggle. All in all\, we hear Woody Guthrie speaking and singing from beyond the grave\, warning us about the dangers of ignoring and repeating history. \n\n\n\nListen up all you Jim Crow fascists and you race-hate mongers\, too:Will Kaufman is a-comin’ and he’s got his eye on you.Won’t brake for no excuses\, won’t stand no messin’ around\,Your bigot ways can’t save you ’cause Will Kaufman’s gonna run you down.– Ry Cooder \n\n\n\nNo one can understand the American people without listening to Woody Guthrie. Will Kaufman’s doing important work here. – Tom Paxton \n\n\n\nI thank Will Kaufman for introducing a new generation of Europeans to “the other America.” It’s a wonderful job he’s doing. – Pete Seeger \n\n\n\nWill does it all so well! – Steve Tilston \n\n\n\nWill presents this exhilarating show in the fastest hour and a half you are likely to witness when you consider the breadth and depth of his subject. He performs Woody’s songs with great skill and understanding\, playing the guitar\, banjo and fiddle with enviable panache and brio. His presentation is accomplished with great musicality\, wit\, honesty\, and compassion. – Ralph McTell \n\n\n\nI so appreciate all of your efforts to take his legacy further. Who knows where he’ll end up! – Nora Guthrie

SUMMARY:Ghost Stories: A Night Opera @ The Bridgewater Hall 27/10/19
DESCRIPTION:Neil Campbell – classical guitar\nAnne Taft – soprano (Ghost Stories)\nShaun Taft – visuals (Ghost Stories) \nLiverpool composer and multi-instrumentalist Neil Campbell’s work traverses minimalism\, progressive rock\, world music & jazz. He has been called ‘an outstanding guitarist whose originality of thought makes him far more than just another gifted purveyor of finger acrobatics.’ by Classical Guitar Magazine and his work has been referred to by Tom Robinson\, BBC 6 Music\, as ‘music of serious quality and distinction’ . \nIn this performance Neil will perform an exciting uptempo opening set of original music for solo guitar in which he uses loops and delays to expand the scope of the solo classical guitar. In the second half of the concert he will be joined by soprano Anne Taft for a complete performance of Ghost Stories. \n“As I listen to this\, I imagine grey clouds whirring by in stop-motion frenzy\, or a vampire crying as the October sun rises. This is simply so romantic and resonant. A perfect album for quiet nights alone with the soul. “Ghost Stories” manages to be ambient\, instrumental\, and goth all rolled in one. Highly recommended.” – Gary Flanagan\, Nightwaves \nSunday 27th October 2019\, 7.30pm\nBarbirolli Room\, Bridgewater Hall\, Manchester \nTickets: £15 (+£2.50 booking fee)\nbridgewater-hall.co.uk/whats-on/ghost-stories-271019

SUMMARY:Reg Meuross: Song Cycles @ Music Room 27/04/19
DESCRIPTION:Singer\, songwriter and storyteller Reg Meuross uses words and music to paint pictures that remain with the listener long after the song has been sung. \nDescribed as ‘a brilliant singer-songwriter with a social conscience’ by Mark Radcliffe on BBC Radio 2 Folk Show\, Reg’s catalogue brings characters from history to life\, songs of protest and some of the most heart aching love songs ever written\, performed with depth and spellbinding delivery. \nIn this stunning solo show\, the master storyteller in song presents two powerful song cycles\, each centred around a prominent political activist. \nThe first song cycle is centred around Woody Guthrie’s song ‘Deportees’\, which called for the 28 Mexicans who were killed in the tragic Los Gatos air crash of 1948 to be remembered as individuals\, not as ‘28 Deportees’. \nThe second song cycle\, entitled ‘12 Silk Handkerchiefs’\, celebrates the strength and selfless perseverance of Big Lil’ Bilocca and her fight for greater safety on Hull’s fishing trawlers after the triple disaster of 1968. These are songs that capture the spirit of protest and are also full of compassion and insight into the human condition. \nPowerful and moving songwriting \nThe Telegraph\n\n…echoes of early Dylan\, Tom Paxton and Leonard Cohen \nThe Guardian\n\n£14\, £17 (Premium)
