EP review: Amie K – Solas

Amie K - Solas ep album art

Artist – Amie K

EP – Solas

Released – 23rd April 2021

Reviewer – Stuart Todd, Liverpool Acoustic

Originally from Bath and now based in Liverpool, folk pop singer-songwriter Amie K comes into her own with her latest release.

The EP Solas is literally a homemade family affair produced by her brother Leo, mixed and mastered by her father Danny, her sister Alicia providing backing vocals and her mother Ita supplying the artwork. Incidentally, the EP explores themes of home and homesickness. The artist cites Laura Marling as an influence but I can also hear the sound of Dido in her voice.

Daydreaming is an understated opener that grows with each subsequent listen, while Dreaming Of May lifts things up with a fuller sound. The modal folk ambience of Sunflowers is a highlight of the set. Pink Skies is also an appealing track that has a winning chorus and is the most commercial sounding track here. Amie’s songs are well crafted and tastefully recorded.

A personal collection, Amie’s lush delicate voice and ambient melodic folk pop style comes to the fore on this excellent release.
