Berlin singer and composer Dorothy Bird has been keeping busy with various projects, including the recent online Songwriting Challenge event with Operation Lightfoot.

Citing her influences as Bjork and Goldfrapp, the Liverpool based artist has a reputation of releasing music of the highest quality.

Recorded at Crosstown Studios, her latest release Kaleidoscope is a dark brooding ballad. This stately piece features an impressive string arrangement, which musically recalls the early work of Kate Bush.

The electronica elements of her previous work on tracks like Forgot are absent here and have been replaced by more traditional instrumentation.  Her primary instrument, the piano is largely kept in the background here with the tasteful use of cello – courtesy of Natasha Jaffe – up front in the mix.

What’s remarkable about Kaleidoscope is that the emotional feel of the song isn’t sacrificed by the technical detail. What’s more, the elaborate string arrangement doesn’t overpower the expressive vocal work on display. This is probably thanks to producer Jon Lawton, who does an impressive job of balancing the levels.

Kaleidoscope by Dorothy Bird is highly recommended and serves as the first essential independent release of the year.
