Single review: Shadow Captain – The Pan Piper

shadow captain the pied piper

Artist – Shadow Captain

Single – The Pan Piper

Release date – 2nd October 2020

Reviewer – Barry Briercliffe

The new single from Shadow Captain (Stuart Todd) is a folky affair, which sees an Irish feel mixed with songwriting as strong as Lennon and McCartney. Picking up where previous single Hey Django left off, The Pan Piper wouldn’t sound out of place on Rubber Soul.

The production is clean and crisp, with great fiddle playing from Amy Chalmers (of Two Black Sheep) being a lovely added touch. The track was recorded with Andy Fernihough at Crash and 3rd Planet Studios and has been mastered by Pete Maher (U2, The Rolling Stones, Nick Cave).

Stuart knows how to write a great melody and this new song is no different from his other songs, clocking in at just under 2 and a half minutes, it’s a track that makes the listener reach for the repeat button.
